South Africa offers hotels ranging from small private hotels, country hotels, national hotels of which many are of international standards. Very popular alternative accommodation. Guest Houses and B&B's have taken the South African accommodation market by storm. From small establishments to highly professional, the Guest House offers true South African hospitality at its best. As with hotels, price is a good indicator of quality. Guest Houses offer value for money. Normally breakfast, whether English or Continental is included in rates. Enquire from the establishment whether Dinner is also being offered, again mostly at an additional charge. Set in normal residential homes and the personal attention received from your hosts are exceptional. Privacy is respected.
Self-catering units are normally small self-contained units, either on residential properties or within resorts and holiday apartments. Normally fully equipped, very reasonably priced and allowing total privacy. Certain self-catering establishments offer the options of served breakfasts or nearby restaurants. Self-catering establishments are mostly more cost-effective per person than other types of accommodation.
The word "lodge" can be misleading in context. Mainly accommodation establishments of a guest house nature set on small and large farms and hunting areas. Various Guest Houses do, however, market themselves as a lodge. As with other accommodation establishments, obtain clarity on "what is on offer" prior to making reservations.
Large park-like establishments offering designated "stands", communal bathroom areas, cooking-, laundry facilities and individual electricity/power connection per stand. Camping equipment ranges from small tents to luxury caravans and are NOT provided. Certain camps do offer camping equipment for hire.
Basic accommodation facilities in communal hostel/boarding room style. Back-packer accommodation is popular amongst student travellers.
The majority of game reserves are under the control of various different levels of government although many private game reserves are also in place. Accommodation in these reserves ranges from luxury hotels to bush camps and self-catering cottages providing a number of beds. Many game reserves also provide Guest House facilities.
